Concours SA 2023 celebrates classic motoring excellence
The landscape of modern motoring is rapidly changing. EVs, hybrids, and downsizing are the way of the future, highlighting the growing need to appreciate classic cars. With that said, no name appreciates the value of history more than Concours.
This particular Concours event was nothing short of spectacular, from its location to the metal that was on display. The scene was set on the banks of Munyaka, the largest man-made lagoon in the Southern Hemisphere, where the best-maintained and restored classic cars were displayed.
The usual suspects were on show, like a variety of Ferraris, Porsches, Mercedes-Benz models, and BMWs. For BMW owners, this event was particularly special, being the 50th anniversary of BMW M. Concours provided the perfect opportunity for all classic BMW owners to celebrate their precious cars amongst icons in the motoring world.
Some notable mentions of this event include the stunning BMW M1, Lamborghini Murcielago and Diablo, BMW 530 MLE, Opel Kadett Super Boss, a selection of Rolls-Royces and Bentleys, the E-Type Jaguar, and a variety of Porsches.
The main event of the Concours is the judging, where cars are placed under a microscope to find the best-kept and most iconic car. The results are as follows:
3rd place: Porsche 911 Carrera (G-series) 1988
2nd place: Ferrari F355 Berlinetta “Serie Fiorano” 1998
1st place: Porsche 911 Carrera 1984
The Councourse Master of Ceremonies, Greg Marucchi, stated that this year was “arguably the best standard of competition yet seen at Concours South Africa. We were delighted to showcase the African continent’s best cars on the shores of Munyaka’s shimmering lagoon, a mile high in the Johannesburg sky”.
Once again, Concours provided Gauteng with an impressive motoring spectacle. and continues to set the bar regarding high-quality motoring shows in the nation. I look forward to seeing what’s in store for 2024.
