Lepas L2 could be the hot hatch SA needs right now

It’s still a prototype, but it seems poised to become a serious contender in the hot hatch segment.

Lepas L2 could be the hot hatch SA needs right now

Chinese cars in South Africa are on a serious rise, and they currently occupy almost every segment available locally. That’s a good thing, but the hot hatch segment has been noticeably absent.

And that absence was felt, especially given how significantly the hot hatch segment has declined over the years. The current GAC Emzoom R-Style with 130kW and 270Nm is modest on paper, but it has the right bits and bobs. Yet it’s not a hot hatch in the traditional sense.

Lepas, a new Chinese marque under the Chery Group that recently entered the SA market, seems to be prepping something, well…hot. Seen at the brand’s headquarters in Wuhu is the L2, a compact hot hatch prototype that seems to have what it takes to become a serious contender in the hot hatch segment.

It’s a stunning design that many local hot hatch enthusiasts will find easy to fall in love with. Think a low-sung and aggressive front-end silhouette, 19-inch wheels that house Brembo brake callipers, a glass roof (though we expect the production model to swap that for a functional roof that opens and tilts), and naturally, two centre-mounted exhaust tips.

While it seems to pack some serious attitude, Lepas wasn’t keen to discuss any further details regarding the L2. An insider told us it will likely feature a 1.5-litre hybrid engine with ‘serious’ power. The engine is no surprise. It’s a familiar unit within Chinese marques, however, a 1.6-litre turbopetrol paired with a DCT would make an ideal powertrain for this hot hatch.

In terms of size, no concrete details were shared, but the prototype is about the same size as most hatches in the B-segment, such as the Hyundai i20 and VW Polo. When it comes, it would go head-to-head with the performance versions of these; the i20 N with its 1.6-litre turbopetrol (150kW/275Nm), which isn’t available in SA, and the infamous GTI with 147kW and 320Nm from a 2.0-litre TSI engine.

Could it work? Absolutely, if the pricing is right. And knowing how aggressive Chinese marques have been in this market, there’s every reason to believe Lepas will come in swinging sometime in 2027. If it does, the hot hatch segment, already on life support, might just get the shot in the arm it desperately needs.
