First Drive: Volkswagen Golf 8.5 GTI

VW’s iconic Golf GTI is back. And it turns things up a notch.

The Golf GTI needs no introduction. It’s the hatch South Africans adore above all others, and yet when the Golf 8 GTI launched some years ago, it left a sour taste in many mouths. The 7.5 GTI had shown us what exciting, on-the-edge FWD driving was all about; the 8 arrived with a surgical, overly composed demeanour that stripped much of that identity away. Remarkably, VW agrees, and the 8.5 is a direct response to many complaints and a reminder of how a GTI should feel. I’m happy to report that the spirit of the 7.5 is back in some capacity, but naturally wearing a different face.

At first glance, the 8.5 is nothing more than a revised bumper with new LED headlights and taillights. The interior tells a similar story, except for one major addition: a new 12.9-inch infotainment screen that is genuinely impressive, sharp-looking, and intuitive to use. More importantly, VW has restored physical steering wheel buttons in place of the haptic controls. Thank you, VW. The Harman Kardon audio is absent, which is a minor disappointment, but a small gripe in the grand scheme of overall improvements. The real progress, though, is only evident once you’re behind the wheel with a new focus on chassis engineering and an enhanced exhaust note.

For the first time, South Africa is receiving the full European-spec GTI. Previously, fuel quality concerns meant we were handed a detuned engine with less power than overseas models. Now, the filters have been reworked to extract full performance from local petrol without harming the engine.

The result is 195kW at the front wheels (15kW more than the 8) and a 0-100km/h sprint of 5.9 seconds. The increase is noticeable, but without burying the headline here, the exhaust note has some of the Vrrpha essence with proper cracking and popping. There’s some nervousness under hard acceleration, and it delivers the hot hatch thrills the 8 so desperately lacked. The iconic Queenstown wheels, those beautifully rounded 19-inch GTI rims, remain, thankfully.

In the corners, the chassis revisions means the GTI 8.5 is more playful, with the front end more willing to rotate under braking, the rear stepping out willingly when you throw it into a corner, and immediate throttle response on corner exit. A touch of understeer is present, sure, but it only adds to the sense of involvement rather than sapping from it.

Dial it back, and the same qualities that made the standard 8.5 Golf our Hatch of the Year shine through in the GTI. It’s comfortable on the open road, genuinely practical, and pleasantly responsive even in its muted everyday mode. The Sport button isn’t a gimmick either, as it significantly transforms the car’s character.

I wasn’t expecting such a meaningful transformation in the 8.5, but I’m happy to report that the GTI identity is well and truly back. At R908,000, it’s a significant ask, but for the first time, it makes a strong argument for itself against its R1-million rivals, and with some drama, character, and a sharp edge, I’m willing to say that it can now go toe-to-toe with the likes of a Honda Civic Type R. Thank you, VW. You brought the GTI-ness back.
