VW Applies Final Touches to Refreshed Touareg

Volkswagen is applying final touches to its refreshed Touareg premium SUV, which is scheduled to debut in the coming weeks.

Previewed wearing a full camouflage cloak, the new Touareg is still doing its final testing rounds in Lapland, Sweden. While the wrap makes it challenging to spot the changes, we can see the newly-developed IQ. Light HD matrix headlights and the LED light strip fitted in the current Golf, Polo and Tiguan.

The rear features an illuminated VW logo for the first time on a VW car.

Besides the revamped look, the Touareg’s suspension has been further developed for enhanced comfort. A roof load sensor also measures the added weight to adjust the electronic stability control system automatically. The system works to increase agility when the roof isn’t loaded.

Moving to the interior, VW says it has fitted the Touareg with the ‘Innovision Cockpit’, which made its debut in the 3rd-gen model. The system uses a 15″ central touchscreen which the German marque says offers lane-precise navigation and high-resolution HD map data as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The interior has further been improved for added comfort, thanks to softer centre console panels and armrests.

We expect the current 3.0-litre TDI V6 engine to soldier on with its 190 kW and 600 Nm of torque, however, since electrification is now a serious topic at VW, an eHybrid variant could join the range at a later stage, packing up to 340 kW and 600 Nm. All the engines will use a standard 8-speed automatic gearbox plus a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

The Touareg is earmarked for a global debut in the coming months and will continue to be built in Bratislava, Slovakia, where other products that ride on the MLB platform are manufactured.

Take a closer look at the Touareg; it plays in the executive family SUV fold with so much sensibility and competence and potential that it should be an easier sell than many of its competitors. Hopefully, proper marketing, especially in SA, can help the Touareg reclaim lost ground.
